Monitoring Necessary For All Slaughterhouses & Butchers

The time has come for us to wake up and start questioning. This was the clear message being given at a meeting held earlier this week of the Ulema of the Markazi Jamat Ahle Sunnat, regarding the current issue of Halal meat. The Halal meat market in UK and Europe is one of the fastest growing sectors today. The demand for Halal meat is growing on an annual basis at an exceptionally fast rate.

Sadly the supply of authentic Halal meat is reducing in comparison to this number. This is because the demand far outweighs the production of genuinely Halal meat.

The Sharia Halal Board was launched earlier this year in an effort to tackle this exact issue and to stamp out Haraam meat being sold as Halal.

Speaking at a meeting earlier this week Allama Ahmed Nisar Beg Qadri, senior Mufti on the panel of the Sharia Halal Board stated,

‘’We believe all slaughter houses should be monitored, not just some slaughterhouses. Equally all the shop keepers and butchers in UK should be subject to strict monitoring, this is the ONLY way we will be able to ensure that 100% Halal meat is being supplied and sold to the Muslim community.

Allama Qazi Abdul Aziz Chishti, President of the Marazki Ulema & Mushaikh Council speaking at the meeting stated “Currently there is no monitoring of the most common slaughter method of semi stun and hand slaughter. We have helped in establishing and are fully supporting the Sharia Halal Board in this aspect. They have launched a monitoring system for all slaughter houses which slaughter by hand according to Islamic Sharia”

Research has shown that many shop keepers and butchers are buying from any slaughter house that they feel is cheap and can supply them the meat they require on the day in question, equally due to high demand some distributers of Halal meat will be forced to buy from machine kill abattoirs to full fill the demand placed on them by the shop keepers.

Professor Syed Ahmed Hussain speaking at the meeting stated “We would like to make it very clear that Machine Kill slaughter is totally unacceptable according to correct rulings and should not be deemed Halal”

The Sharia Halal Board has found that mixed meat is being sold in local shops and this will have meat from companies which are deemed Haraam or Unislamic due to using machine kill methods.

We believe the local shops should also be subject to monitoring as they are liable for the meat they supply. This would ensure Muslims are being sold Halal meat.

It is time for the consumer to wake up and take responsibility and be vigilant when purchasing meat from local shops, they should not simply be blinded by trust and loyalty to their local shop keeper.

The Sharia Halal Board advises that you take caution when purchasing your meat and ensure you ask your local shop keeper or butcher where the meat was purchased from and also for them to show you their certificate.

InshAllah we hope from January 2013 you will be able to purchase meat monitored by the Shariah Halal Board from all parts of the UK. We will endeavour to keep Muslims posted via literature and our website.
